Welcome to the New England Triton Association!
The 28' Pearson Triton sailboat was designed in the late 1950s by Carl Alberg as a contemporary family cruiser and racer for an era only just beginning to realize the potential of fiberglass yacht construction. As one of the first affordable fiberglass production sailboats, the Triton was considered revolutionary for her time.
Thanks to the foresight of a Rhode Island yacht broker, Tom Potter, and the cousins Clint and Everett Pearson, the Triton began a successful production run of over 700 boats at the 1959 New York Boat show, with production continuing until 1967. While most Tritons were built at Pearson Yachts in Bristol, RI (so-called "east coast" Tritons), an unconfirmed number of hulls were built under license by Aeromarine Plastics of Sausalito, CA. These "west coast" Tritons incorporated several different construction techniques from their east coast siblings, but shared the same basic design.
Despite the age of the design, there continues to be active and passionate interest in the boats' notable sailing competence, with a dedicated cult following to the rich class history and folklore surrounding the boat's conception and construction. Originally founded in 1976, the New England Triton Association (NETA) was conceived to encourage owner-driven support for the maintenance and enjoyment of Tritons during their golden years. Today, NETA seeks a refined role as records keepers and archivists of the Triton production history for posterity, and to maintain interest in the class through this website.
